Critical Reflection

Back at the start of the module when I did the descriptive reflection, I gave myself the goal of improving my language and writing. I learned that it is important to apply critical thinking and critical reflection skills to many things, such as my writing for letters or reports. I was taught several topics about critical thinking throughout the course, such as Dewey's model of reflective thought and action. It is a step-by-step thinking process starting from defining the problem, analyzing it, reading up on and studying relevant, valid topics to find solutions, generating multiple solutions and finally choosing the best solution that is the most logical and superior. This has greatly assisted me in understanding a challenging concept as it allowed me to question and reflect on my thought process. This in turn helped not only with my tech report and summary reader response but also reports in the other modules, as now I have a clearer understanding of how to start and the direction ...

Proposed solution Team Gaia

Image
2 Proposed solution Currently the main problem with the Interceptor Trashfence was its failure due to sheer amounts of trash pushing against the fence, causing it to topple. The solution to this problem is to constantly remove the trash as it is being collected, by adding a conveyor system design to the Trashfence, which will redirect the trash into a separate collection bin. Here are 5 proposed upgrades which the team came up with to help with this problem (refer to appendix A on how it works and a rough sketch). 2.1 Conveyor belt system The conveyor belt system is similar to its current design. However, 2 rotating motors will be placed on land at the ends, then a flexible fence will be installed that rotates along with it constantly, as seen in figure 5. By implementing this design, the trash will be collected the same way as before, however the rotating mechanism will carry the trapped rubbish along with it to the ends. At the ends, there will be a filter to separate the rubbi...

The web page “How an accidental discovery made this year could change the world” from BIGTHINK (Lockett, 2022) introduces the possibility of replacing our current choice of lithium-ion batteries with lithium-sulfur batteries due to their advantages. According to Lockett (2022) lithium-ion batteries have lifecycle problems from repeated charging, and battery degradation, which means a higher cost is required for battery replacement, and when mined, the materials are extremely harmful to the environment discharging toxic chemicals. Lithium-sulfur batteries are an improvement on the above issues but have only half the charging cycle of lithium-ion batteries (Lockett, 2022). However, Drexel scientists’ recent discovery of monoclinic gamma-phase sulfur, although not fully understood to be put into practical use, prevents battery degradation in lithium-sulfur batteries altogether (Lockett, 2022). Compared to lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries last two times longer, have three ti...
